Master Class with Christian Frei

Doc filmmakers encounter all sorts of questions. From practical challenges to ethical consideration, it could be overwhelming especially for the amateurs. No worries! For 2019 Master Class with Documentarian, we join hands with Consulate General of Switzerland in Hong Kong to bring you a full-day workshop with OSCAR nominated documentary filmmaker, Christian Frei on 17 February 2019 (Sunday) at The University of Hong Kong. Frei will reveal his personal recipe for doc-filmmaking. Oh yes, it will literally turn into a counselling hub. So get your questions ready!

Swiss director and producer Christian Frei  is considered one of today’s most innovative and compelling documentary filmmakers. He was nominated for an Academy Award with WAR PHOTOGRAPHER (2001) and won the World Cinema Directing Award at Sundance with SPACE TOURISTS (2009). For his latest production GENESIS 2.0 he reached out to Siberian filmmaker Maxim Arbugaev and explored the front lines of genetic science, winning Sundance World Cinema Documentary Award for Cinematography 2018. From the very start of his career, Frei established a reputation as an exacting documentarian, with a perfect grasp of his subjects. His films are considered to be humanistic and universal, as much as subtle and insistent.

Frei was the president of the Documentary Film Commission for the film section of the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, and is now the president of the Swiss Film Academy. Since 2006, he has taught at the renowned University of St. Gallen (HSG).
