Screenings & Lecture Events

Throughout the year, Hong Kong Documentary Initiative organises a variety of documentary screenings, discussions and critiques to promote visual literacy and foster the creation of a community of documentary lovers. The events target film enthusiasts, filmmakers, cultural critics, students and the mass media in Hong Kong and beyond.

My Film Journey – A dialogue with Oscar nominated filmmaker Shuibo Wang | 27 October 2017

Shuibo Wang was nominated for an Oscar with his debut film “SUNRISE OVER TIANANMEN SQUARE” and also directed the acclaimed film “THEY CHOSE CHINA”. In a seminar at The University of Hong Kong, Shuibo shared the creative process of his colourful film projects. Screening of Still Tomorrow and Q&A | 13 October 2017

HK20+1 | 28 September to 12 October 2017

Collaborated with HKU General Education Unit, the series presents six documentaries showing stories of Hong Kong in the past 20 years: King of Kowloon (1998), Citizen Hong Kong (1999), Rice Distribution (2003), Out of Tune (2016), Yau King (2017) and Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower (2017). It also includes a mentorship programme to encourage students to document current Hong Kong with guidance from profession filmmakers.


Dialogue with Filmmakers 2017 | 10-24 April 2017

Dialogue with Filmmakers brings world-renowned documentary filmmakers from this year’s Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) to The University of Hong Kong for a series of in-depth dialogues and special screenings. Events are free and open to all.


Screening of “The Blood of Yingzhou District”and “In Search of Perfect Consonance”| 14 & 21 Feb 2017

Part of HKU’s General Education Programmes (Second Semester, 2016-17), two free screenings of Director Ruby Yang’s The Blood of Yingzhou District(2006) and In Search of Perfect Consonance (2016) are hosted on 14 February and 21 February respectively. Post-screening discussion with the director will follow both screenings.

“Tongzhi in Love” Screening x LGBT Walking Tour | 3 Dec 2016

A unique collaboration with CNEX and Walk in Hong Kong, featuring the screening of Oscar winning director Ruby Yang’s Tongzhi in Love — a rare glimpse into how gay men in China negotiate their identities under the pressure of conflicting traditional values, preceded by a LGBT walking tour in Central. Post-screening discussion with the director and walking tour guide Benita Chick, hosted by Dr. Jason Ho.


Dialogue with Filmmakers 2016 | March & April 2016

In association with Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), world-renowned documentary filmmakers were invited for a series of in-depth public lectures at HKU in March and April of 2016.
